North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) is a state key university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China. It has been officially listed in the national “211 Project”. As a major public university, NCEPU is characterized for its predominant disciplines of “Energy Resources & Electric power”, and committed to providing talents and technologies for the development of the Chinese electric power industry. To meet the nation’s needs for sustainable energy, NCEPU established the first Renewable Energy School (RES) under the supports of the National Energy Administration of China, Ministry of Education of China and the renewable power industry in China in 2007. It offers an interdisciplinary degree program which is structured from an integration of various subjects, such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, automation, hydroelectric, wind and solar energy.

RES endeavors to be a world class innovation base on renewable energy. It serves to cultivate intelligence and promote high-level research of science and technology in the area of renewable energy.

At present, RES has 8 research divisions, namely Wind Power Research Center , Centre for Hydroelectric Energy & Engineering Research, Solar Energy Research Centre, Center for New Energy Materials and Photoelectric Technology, Biomass Energy Research Centre, New Energy Resources and Urban Environment Research Centre, Hydropower Resettlement Research Center and Experimental Teaching Centre.

There are 92 faculty members in RES, including 18 Ph.D. supervisors, 23 professors and 30 associate professors. 98.5% of them hold doctorate degrees and many are well known experts in their research fields. One professor is the chief scientist of the national “973” program, two professors have won the National Project of “Hundred, Thousand, and ten Thousand” Talents, two faculty members have been granted the National Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 5 scholars have been selected for Project of Supporting Outstanding Talents in the New Century by the Ministry of Education. RES also makes great efforts to attract young talents. The research groups are well structured by major and age, the highly motived professionals have created a strong academic atmosphere for teaching and studying in RES.

For undergraduate study, RES has launched 4 bachelor programs; these are “Hydraulic and Hydro-Power Engineering”, “Hydrology and Water Resources”, “Renewable Energy Science and Engineering” and “New Energy Materials and Devices”. In addition, there are 3 major directions that have been offered under the program of “Renewable Energy Science and Engineering”, which are “Wind Power”, “Solar PV” and “Bio-mass Energy”. In the current academic year, 1272 undergraduate students have been enrolled in RES.

For postgraduate education, RES offers interdisciplinary Ph.D. and Master programs on Renewable Energy and Clean Energy Resources which are the inter-discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics and Electrical Engineering. RES also offer Master programs on Water Conservancy: Hydrology & Water Resource Engineering,Hydraulic Structure Engineering, and Hydraulic and Hydro-Power Engineering. There are 37 Ph.D candidates and 304 Master students attended RES in this year.

RES is also the home of some top research labs. Currently, RES has 4 major labs of state and provincial level, which are the National Engineering Laboratory of Biomass Power Generation Equipment, State Key Laboratory of Alternate Power System with Renewable Energy Sources, Beijing Key Laboratory of New Thin Film Solar Cells, and Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Security and Clean Utilization.

In recent years, RES made remarkable progress in the research of renewable energy. More than 800 papers have been published in the scientific journals, among which, 300 are SCI cited papers and over 300 articles are cited by EI. 3 ministry level Technology awards have been awarded to RES. 10 textbooks have been published for teaching purposes. A burden of national projects were undertaken by our research teams including: 1 national “973” project, 1 National Science and Technology Major Project of Nano-technology Research, 5 “863” projects, 2 National Science Funds for “Distinguished Young Scholars”, 1 International Cooperation funds and over 50 National Science Funds. A total research funding of more than 220 million yuan has been achieved by RES.

RES has intensively developed its international collaboration and communications. Strong connections have been built with universities and research institutions worldwide, including Uppsala University Sweden, Sweden Royal Institute of Technology, Malardalen University, University of Strathclyde, University of Manchester, University of Bath, University of Cranfield, University of New South Wales, Denmark Technology University, Aalborg University, Electricite de France, Federal Polytechnic School of Switzerland,  Pohang University of Science and Technology, Sungkyunkwan University, University of California in Davis, University of Texas in Arlington, Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and etc.
