Delegation Led by President Liu Jizhen Visited Universities and Research Institutions in the United States

       In late October, the delegation led by President Liu Jizhen visited the Eleetrie Power Research Institute of America,  University of Tennessee, Western Kentucky University and exchanged views on talents cultivation, scientific research, communication, cooperation and the development of the Confucius Institute and signed Inter-university cooperation agreement. The delegation members include the Assistant President Lyu Fangcheng, Wang Qinghua, Director of the President’s office, Bi Tianshu, Executive Vice-director of the State key laboratory of New Energy Power System and Liu Yongqian, Head of International Cooperation Department.

        While in Eleetrie Power Research Institute of America, the delegation visited the Knoxville laboratory and listened to the introduction by the Lab Director Karen R. Forsten. And they also exchanged ideas on development and utilization of new energy, research and future expectations of smart grid, electric mobile research, organization and operation mechanism of electric science institutes with the American counterparts and also gave a brief introduction of the research progress on these issues.

        In the University of Tennessee, President Liu had talks with the President of the University of Tennessee Jimmy G. Cheek and reached an agreement on the communications between students and teachers of two universities and the cooperation on research and schooling, and signed the “NCEPU- UT Cooperation Memorandum”. Besides, the delegation also met with Dr. Kevin Tomsovic, the Dean of the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. Wayne T. Davis, Head of the engineering department and Dr. Liu Yilu, Dr. Leon and Dr. Fred Wang from State Power Research Center of CURENT (Center for Ultra-wide-area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks) and visited CURENT co-sponsored by National Science Fund and the State Ministry of Energy under the guidance of Professor Kevin Tomsovic and Professor Yilu Liu. And both sides exchanged their ideas on the cooperation and communication on the smart grid development.

       In the Western Kentucky University, President Liu and the President of Western Kentucky UniversityDr. Gary A. Ransdell co-presided over the Confucius Institute Council Meeting and met with Dr. Pan Weiping,  the “Thousand Plan” scholar and Dean of the Confucius Institute of Western Kentucky University, visited Wu Yanjun, Deputy Director of International Cooperation Department of our university and other personnel who are working there. The delegation also accepted the interview by the TV station of Western Kentucky University and visited the Combustion Science and Environmental Technology Research Center. The Confucius Institute was established in 2011 by NCEPU and Western Kentucky University. In the past year, under the support of Hanban and the cooperation between our two universities, we have made major progress in the development of the Confucius Institute. So far, there are more than 8,000 students from Kentucky State learning Chinese there, which is among the most in the United States Confucius Institutes. According to the agreement, NCEPU and Western Kentucky University will carry out more cooperation in scientific research and students’ communications.

       The visit led by President Liu Jizhen strengthened the American universities’ understanding of our university and deepened our international influence. We exchanged opinions and reached agreements, marking a significant milestone in the international cooperation between NCEPU and the universities in America.
