President Liu Jizhen of NCEPU Accepted CCTV Special Interview

On December22, President Liu attended a special interview by journalist Zhou Xiaoli from CCTV. In the interview, President Liu stated that as a key university characterized by energy and power specialties, North China Electric Power University will as always meet national strategic needs to make her own contributions to climate change and global energy crisis.   

    He also pointed out that at present, since fossil fuel has been approaching exhausted, main issues like energy shortage, climate change and environmental pollution have aroused common concern in human society. As for climate change, a common issue for all the humans, both in the developed and the developing countries, should take a corresponding responsibility more sincerely and cooperate with each other in developing the technological market.        

    He continued, “Shortly before, on behalf of schools, I attended the China-U.S. Clean Energy Roundtable Conference and made a speech, which adequately shows that China has put great attention to energy environment and that schools have played an increasingly important role in major development strategies of China. To solve this serious problem, people from all over the countries, regions and all walks of life should work together. Besides, there is no doubt that colleges and universities should also make a positive effort.”

    He stressed that collages and universities in both China and the USA could make use of new technologies to conduct further technical cooperation, especially in looking for more chances to cultivate talents together. Meanwhile, we are glad to see that in Copenhagen COP15, leaders from all over the world are attaching great importance to climate change and taking efforts to find a solution. China is playing a very important role during this conference and he believed that with world efforts, a good solution would be reached to deal with climate change.      

    When talking about how to serve national development strategies and how to connect the development of the university to satisfy the needs of China, President Liu said that for the past few years, NCEPU has undertaken missions and tasks required by national strategies and made a positive contribution to high-qualified talents cultivation and high-level scientific research when meeting the requirements of national electric power development.

    NCEPU has proposed to set up a comprehensive electric power specialty system, which is based on traditional superior discipline, orientated on emerging energy discipline and supported by science and arts disciplines. Then, since the year 2002, on the basis of traditional superior disciplines such as thermal power and power system, NCEPU has built some new energy disciplines including hydroelectric power, nuclear power and wind power and so on. What’s more, the first renewable energy school in China was established in this university, and the transformation of traditional specialty system was achieved. Under the current situation, NCEPU has made great efforts to participate in the major scientific and technological innovation of national electric power field to provide talents emergently needed by enterprises, giving full scope to our advantages of an industry-oriented university to serve national development strategies.   

    President Liu reviewed the developing history of NCEPU and talked about the contributions NCEPU had made to the development of China’s national power industry. NCEPU progressed with the prosperity of China, and the history of NCEPU was a history created by several generations of faculties and students. NCEPU came into being with the rapid development of China’s power industry. In 2003, the transference of administrative right to the Ministry of Education provided a perfect solution to the management system, and since then NCEPU has set its foot on the road of flourishing. In the past 51 years, NCEPU had cultivated over 100 thousand talents for China. With installation capacity, grid size and gross generation at the top in the world, the key to the fantastic development of China’s power industry was talents and technology. Without excellent management and technical personnel, little progress would have been made. What we are proud of is that such a large number of students of NCEPU play an active role in China’s power industry and promote its growth with their hard work and intelligence. In addition to talent cultivation, a university should also realize knowledge and technology innovation and serve the society. NCEPU has contributed a lot in technology creation. For instance, Academician Yang Qixun dedicated himself to the research of micro-processor protection technology, and exported this world-top technology to Britain, India, and some other international markets.

    President Liu thought that international exchange and cooperation was an indispensable part in the construction of a high-level university and should be taken as a significant development strategy. We must make further use of international resource and market and carry out wider and deeper international exchange and cooperation to build a high standard university and achieve vaster development prospect. NCEPU ought to seek for international cooperation actively and strive to make more contribution to technology innovation and talent cultivation. Besides the developed countries, NCEPU had better also pay special attention to the third world countries by offering more support and help in technical training, overseas students culture, etc.

    President Liu also held that university culture was the soft power and a crucial component of a university’s core competitive power. It was the university culture that exerted a subtle influence on the faculties and students so that they have common thinking pattern, behavioral modes and values. School motto was an essential part of university culture, the spirit of a university. The motto of NCEPU is “Solidarity, Diligence, Pragmatism and Innovation”. Only through “solidarity” can NCEPU accomplish cohesive force which in turn becomes a strong motive power for the development of NCEPU. Only through “diligence” can NCEPU achieve glorious performance. By “pragmatism” we mean to seek truth from facts and proceed from reality in all aspects, follow the objective laws and keep down-to-earth. By “innovation” we mean to obtain first-class scientific research achievements and cultivate creative talents. Under the guidance of the motto “Solidarity, Diligence, Pragmatism, Innovation”, and with the inspiration of the university’s spirit of “Perseverance, Solidarity, Devotion, Eminence”, generations of the faculties and students of NCEPU have insist on working hard and thus help NCEPU achieve quantities of leaps.

    President Liu said that, with the development of NCEPU in recent years, the number of students applying for NCUPU has been increasing, especially in some distinctive specialties. Whatever the specialty is, one must develop his own love for this discipline and try to become a leader in that field. In order to improve the quality of recruited students, we also have self-recruitment, trying to select some students who show their general qualities and special talents in high school.

    President Liu pointed out that the development of personnel is the core to build a high-level university. He said that NCEPU has gone a long way, and we develop our faculty over the years. To build a multi-disciplinary, research-oriented, high-level and internationalized university, we have to nurture a large number of leading academic personnel that are both domestically and internationally well-known, as well as culture a group of young teachers who account for the majority of the school’s faculty.

    President Liu also told the reporters about his experience as a president. He said that, the president first and foremost carries a responsibility, whose effort has a direct bearing on the development. As for himself, his growth was inseparable from the cultivation of the university over the years and he would try his best to serve the university and wish her a better future. He hoped that after several years of development, NCEPU would become one of the famous universities both in China and abroad. To have our own distinctive features, we must follow the rule of education. In building a major power discipline, in addition to emphasis on traditional distinctive disciplines and disciplines of new energy, we have also been highlighting arts and sciences disciplines as a support. We know that without first-class science disciplines, we have no first-class engineering disciplines. The integrated and sustainable development of a university can not be achieved without the strong support of humanities disciplines. We attach great importance to the development of arts and sciences disciplines, and we hope that these disciplines can catch up with other universities in the future.

    President Liu said that, as a president, it is essential to focus on two aspects. On the one hand, we have to pay close attention to the development of the university. To state more specifically, we have to seize as well as create opportunities to promote scientific development. On the other hand, we have to pay close attention to the vital interests of teachers and students, especially to the interests of the students. We have formed a school running philosophy of “running a responsible university”, emphasizing that we must be responsible for the nation, for the society as well as for the students. We take this philosophy not just as a slogan, but as a responsibility. And while fulfilling our own work, we should, at the same time, pass on this responsibility to the students so that they become talents with a strong sense of responsibility.

    Finally, President Liu expressed his hope by saying that one has to continuously strive for success in his life. As far as young people are concerned, they must have the ability to endure hardship, no matter how sound the conditions and the environment are. Otherwise one will never achieve success. He hoped that the students can work hard, try their utmost to improve themselves and become all-round talents.
