President Liu Jizhen addressed the “Sino-US Clean Energy Roundtable” in Beijing Diaoyutai State Guesthouse on November 16th 2009. The clean energy issue is an important content to President Obama’s visit in China. This meeting, co-sponsored by National Energy Administration, China, Department of Energy, United States and Department of Commerce, United States, aims to provide a communication platform for the two governments as well as related enterprises and experts from the two countries. Present were also Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology, China; Liu Qi, Deputy Director of National Energy Administration, China; Gary Locke, Secretary of Commerce, United States; Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy, United States and over 100 representatives from circles of energy, business and academy.

Locke viewed that United States and China should work together to make clean energy the primary driving force of economic growth. Close cooperation between energy research agencies of the two countries, especially between energy related enterprises, will help promote application of clean energy technology at a high speed, thus, contributing to tackle the current challenges  posed by energy problem and climate change. Steven felt quite optimistic about this.

Deputy Director Liu Qi suggested that the two countries should carry out more cooperation in the following areas: technology operation for wind power network system, cooperation and communication on smart-grid technology, reinforcing exploration and utilization of clean coal technology, large-scale application of solar power generation, developing marketplace for hybrid power and electric automobile, formulating policy system to promote the development of new energy.

As a representative of the energy circle and power-oriented universities, President Liu Jizhen was quoted as saying: “the problem between energy and environment is of great concern for us all. We must tackle this problem co-jointly. That China being a developing country and United States the most developed country in the world requires the two countries to carry out more cooperation and communication on science and technology as well as talents cultivation. In this manner, the two countries could work together to cope with the issues of common concern—issues of energy, security, environment etc, and make contribution to world peace and social progress. Cooperation at all levels between the two governments as well as enterprises, research agencies and universities of the two sides in the area of clean energy will have a great impact on world energy and the sustainable development of environment. North China Electric Power University has become cooperation partner to many US research agencies and universities. We hope that, with the support from the two governments, NCEPU can deepen its cooperation with US counterparties in areas of clean energy science and technology as well as talents cultivation in a more extensive manner so as to make greater contribution to the economic and social development.”

This meeting constitutes an important effort by the two sides to promote clean energy and to construct Sino-US Clean Energy Strategic Cooperation. It will further reinforce practical cooperation between the two countries in the area of clean energy. China and the United States will work together to make advancement in clean energy technology and clean energy industry to help with greenhouse gas emission reduction, climate change counter-efforts and the economic and social sustainable development. President Liu Jizhen also discussed with Secretary Steven about issues both concerned.
