The 2009 National PH. D Candidates’ Academic Conference on Automation and Information of Power Stations Held at NCEPU

The 2009 national PH. D candidates’ academic conference on automation and information of power stations, which was held by Degree Management and Postgraduate Education Department of Education Ministry and Office for Degree Commission of the State Council, undertook by NCEPU and sponsored by China Electric Power Research Institute Press was opened on 21st November at NCEPU. 

    The opening saw professors from different universities at present, such as President Li Jizhen, Vice President An Liansuo and former Party Secretary Xu Daping from North China Electric Power University, Vice President and Cheung Kong Scholar Cao Yijia from Hunan University, Vice President Shen Jiong from Southeast University, Cheung Kong Scholar Yu Daren from Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor Wu Zhansong from Tsinghua University, Professor Fang Yanjun from Wuhan University and experts and scholars from colleges and institutes. Meanwhile, representatives of leaders, teachers and PH. D candidates from related departments and Computer Engineering School at NCEPU also attended the meeting.   

    At first, on the behalf of NCEPU, Vice President An Liansuo warmly welcomed all the leaders and experts present and expressed great gratitude for those who showed concern and support for the development of NCEPU. He introduced that NCEPU had been taking serving national energy and electric power as its duty, sticking to socialist teaching view and seriously implementing Party educational principals so as to gain a rapid development in all rounds in the last 50 years, which had achieved significant progress. Therefore, NCEPU accepted the commission and undertook this conference. He also thanked the organizers and those brother colleges for their help and hoped that relation and cooperation could be strengthened to make a contribution to the prosperity of science and technology. Then he wished the conference a complete success.       

    Deputy of the academic committee Professor Yu Daren from Harbin Institute of Technology addressed the opening. He stated that under the serious and responsible attitude of the committee, evaluation on conference papers achieved a complete completion. During the coming two days, the committee would fully participate in evaluating and supervising every PH. D candidate’s report. What was more, according to the contents of a paper and the work of a candidate, they would recommend Distinguished Paper, the Best Scientific and Technological Issue, Excellent Academic Innovation Ideal and the Best Work as well. At the same time, he pointed out that NCEPU had distinctive features in the relevant subjects about the automation and information of power stations, undertook several national key scientific research projects and was honored with many scientific and technological prizes including National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology. He believed that under cooperation of the advisory, the academic and the organizing committee, this conference would accumulate a good knowledge for the future work of PH. D candidates so as to reserve sufficient talents for carrying out the national energy development strategy.   

    On the opening ceremony, Fang Fang, vice director of the Control Science & Engineering School gave a brief introduction of the preparation for the conference. In November, 2008, NCEPU applied for permission to hold the conference. In March, 2009, the Ministry of Education gave a written reply that NCEPU can hold the conference. Beginning in June, 2009, the submission of papers online lasted for three months. After the evaluation of the academic committee, 45 papers from 13 universities were admitted. To provide the ph. D candidates with opportunities to communicate with academic masters, the organizing committee invited some well-known experts, winners of the national top 100 excellent PhD thesis to give report on the conference. The committee also invited some famous experts to give comments at the branch conference venues. Most of the preparation and organization of the conference were carried out by the postgraduates and postgraduates as main body was one characteristic of the innovative program.

    Wang Wei, a PhD candidate from the Control Science & Engineering School delivered a speech at the conference. He said that this was a good chance for the PhD candidates to present their academic works and broaden their eyesight, which told them to see the unknown things from a new perspective and contribute their strength to the development of science and technology for our motherland.

    After the ceremony, Liu Jizhen, president of NCEPU, Cao Yijia, vice president of Hunan University gave a report on “Clean Energy and Automation Information” and “Smart Grid and Its Key Technologies” respectively.

    In the afternoon of 22nd, 2009, experts seminars and PhD candidates seminars were held at the four branch venues at NCEPU International Exchange Center. They conducted free, open, divergent and multi-dimensional discussions on such research areas as automation, information, and energy and power engineering and achieved good results. After the conference, the participants visited the two Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Education and the Ming Tombs Pumped Storage Power Station.

    With “"energy-saving, emission reduction, plant automation and information technology” as its theme, “high starting point and multi-field academic exchanges ” as its principle, “strengthen the foundation, promote the exchange, broaden the horizons, train scientific and technological talents, and improve the quality of postgraduate education” as its aim, the conference provided a platform for academic exchange for all the PhD candidates majored in Control Science and Engineering from various universities.
