NCEPU Celebrated the 51st Anniversary and the Opening of the Main Building

NCEPU held ceremony celebrating the 51st anniversary and the opening of the main school building on October 26th, 2009. More than 20 leaders from the Ministry of Education, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Beijing Municipal Government, Changping District Government, China Guodian Corporation, Chian Huadian Corporation, China Datang Corporation, China Huaneng Corporation, South Grid International and other departments and enterprises were present at the ceremony. All school leaders, more than 20,000 teachers and students, alumni and people from various circles of society also attended the ceremony.

    Wu Zhigong, Secretary of NCEPU Party Committee presided over the meeting. He first introduced the leaders present at the ceremony.     Liu Jizhen, NCEPU president made an important speech on the ceremony. He pointed out that, thanks to the efforts of all the teachers and students, NCEPU had made fast and sound development in the past fifty-one years by taking serving the power and energy industry as our responsibility, adhering to socialist school running direction and implementing the Party’s education policy.

    He said that NCEPU had put great emphasis on campus planning and infrastructure building in the process of school development and construction. The main building covered a construction area of about 230,000 square meters, and the construction area of the first-stage project was about 180,000 square meters. Started in January, 2007, the whole project lasted for 33 months. In the design and construction process, NCEPU attached great importance to the quality of the building. We set up a Project Construction Headquarter to be in charge of quality management and quality inspection so as to ensure that the whole project went on smoothly. With a strong sense of responsibility and mission, all the workers had overcome countless difficulties and completed the construction safely and successfully. Having adopted an advanced fire control system, monitoring system and security information system, the main building is the most advanced and intellectualized building in NCEPU, which marked a breakthrough in the history of campus planning and infrastructure building. After the opening of the main building, a number of national teaching platform and experimental platform would be set up. It would facilitate teaching, studying and researching for the teachers and students by offering  each professor an office and every ordinary teacher a desk. With the completion and inauguration of the main building, NCEPU could further improve school running quality and enhance scientific research level so as to better serve national energy development and local economy development.   

    Shi Yubo, Vice President of State Electricity Regulatory Commission, made a keynot speech. The remarkable celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China demonstrated the tremendous economic and social achievements made by Chinese people since 1949, especially since the adoption of opening-up policy in 1978. As a key national fundamental industry, power industry had also achieved a lot. However, as the structural problem in the course of power industry development became increasingly apparent, measures were in bad need to solve it, and this provided NCEPU which was featured by energy and power disciplines with an unprecedented good opportunity to move forward. In the past 50-odd years, NCEPU had made gradual but notable progress with the support of power enterprises and power industry. Since the 21st century in particular, keeping pace with the changing mechanism of world energy development, NCEPU concentrated on new energy area, and engaged itself in enriching distinctive power discipline system, setting up a high-level technological innovation platform, forming a creative talent cultivation model, and reinforcing the combination of production, teaching and scientific research. By doing so, NCEPU made noticeable contributions to the development of Chinese national power industry and national economic development, and promoted its school-running level and comprehensive strength.

    Shi Yubo also stated that the inauguration of the main building is a happy event in the course of the growth of NCEPU. Its operation would improve the conditions for running a school, and lay a solid material foundation for the growth of comprehensive strength. It marked that NCEPU had already stand on a new starting point as well. Finally, he wished NCEPU a more prosperous and splendid future.

    Zhang Taiqing, Deputy Director of the Development Planning Department of the Ministry of Education, made an important speech as well, in which he said that NCEPU had seized the major historical opportunity of China’s implementing the strategy of rejuvenating our country through science and education and talents. NCEPU centered on the international and domestic energy development trend, took an active part to meet the needs of national energy and power industries, made a constant research on new method to incease disciplines, attempted to cultivate talents of high quality, went out for scientific research, and thus contributed a lot to Chinese economic and social development.

    Zhang Taiqing also expressed that the inauguration of the main building would improve the teaching and learning environment as well as science and research conditions, alleviate the pressure of school resources, promote the conditions for running a school and the comprehensive strength. He firmly believed that NCEPU would work harder and achieve more on the way to a high-quality university. He hoped NCEPU could make a continuous effort to go on updating education concept, further carrying out education reform, improving talent cultivation to provide more talents for the construction of Beijing and China, especially for the energy and power industries, and facilitating the building of a resource-saving and environment-friendly society.

    Liu Limin, Director of Beijing Education Commission, delivered a speech, too. NCEPU, as a key national university of “Project 211”, was characterized by energy and power discipline. For 51 years since its founding, NCEPU had persisted in socialist orientation in school running, fully implemented the Party′s education policy, adhered to the educational rationale/philosophy of schooling of running a responsible university, and made significant contributions to the rapid development of Chinese power industry and social economy. Since the 21st century, especially, NCEPU met the need of national economic and social development for energy and power, enlarged the areas of new energy discipline, and stuck to rejuvenating NCEPU through the combination of production, teaching and scientific research. NCEPU played an active role in the construction of national scientific and technological innovation systems, did a lot of service for local economic and social development, and had got remarkable accomplishments in making break-through in talent cultivation, scientific research, social service, etc.

    Liu Limin said that, as a key university under the Ministry of Education, NCEPU had based itself on Beijing, served Beijing and made contributions to the economic development and social stability of the Capital. He also expressed that Beijing Education Commission would support NCEPU as before and he hoped NCEPU would contribute more to the construction of “People’s Beijing, Hi-tech Beijing and Green Beijing”.

    Cui Xiang, national-listed teacher, also address the meeting. He said with passion that two years ago, this piece of land was overgrown with weeds, but with a passage of time, it has been covered by such a large-scale building with advanced facilities. He explained that a new chapter for NCEPU would be opened with the use of this main building, which could be the new landmark of NCEPU development and a historical witness to the high-quality university construction.  

    He insisted that high-quality university construction has been calling for huge buildings, but also requiring excellence in teaching and culture. Demand of National energy-strategy and the arrival of an international new energy era have provided good opportunities for NCEPU to reach the strategic goals. Inheriting NCEPU’s spirit---self-improvement, forging aheadin unity, loving shool and dedicated, pursuit of excellence, and guided by the teaching aim---be responsible for students, their parents, the university and the society, teachers will commit themselves to improving teaching quality and cultivating excellent students. Cui also urged that NCEPU should, in facing problems hindering the national economic development, continue implementing the “state-level” strategy so as to study and solve key scientific and technological problems in state energy power and make great R&D improvement.

    Chairman of the Student Union Yao Yang made a speech as student representative at the meeting. She said that our Alma Mater has already been through thick and thin in the past 51 years and gained glorious achievements. As the main building’s putting into service, NCEPU would achieve a great improvement in both hardware building and comprehensive strength, which  would undoubtedly make every NCEPU student proud.

    Secretary Wu Zhigong made a conclusion at the meeting. He stated that the opening of the main building was not only an important measure to practice Scientific Outlook on Development and carry out NCEPU’s development strategies which marked that NCEPU has already entered a new stage in all rounds, but also puts forward higher requests for NCEPU to raise management, improve working style and make progress. The official opening of the main building would bring a lot of advantages for NCEPU, such as efficiently improving our environment of both teaching and scientific research, firmly supporting our construction of a high-quality university and laying a good foundation for better service in state energy power industry and local economies.    

    He hoped that all the teachers and students could take great efforts with relentless passion, enterprising spirit and high sense of responsibility and mission to make contributions to a better future of NCEPU as well as the rapid development of national energy power industry and social economy and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

    Under the passionate conductor Zhang Youchi, about 20,000 teachers and students at present sang the lingering melody---the School Song of North China Electric Power University.

    Bright fireworks bloomed and salute chorused. In the inspiring music, leaders seated at the rostrum cut the ribbons for the completion the main building.
