Zuid Holland Delegation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Visited NCEPU

    On June 1, 2009, Zuid Holland delegation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands visited NCEPU and was warmly received by vice president Li Chengrong and president assistant Lv Fangcheng.

    The two sides held a formal conference. Present were vice governor of Province Zuid Holland Ms.Dwarshuis, China project manager of Zuid Holland provincial government Brown Ledesma, Zuid Holland-Hebei joint development project manager Ma Lucy, deputy from office of Zuid Holland joint development project to Hebei Wang Lei, vice president Li Chengrong, president assistant Lv Fangcheng, and leaders from the principal´s office, the International Cooperation Department, Department of Science and Technology and Industry Management Department of NCEPU.

    At the meeting, vice president Li Chengrong briefly introduced the 50-year history of NCEPU with a focus on the development of Renewable Energy School which was established in 2007. He said that the priority of Renewable Energy School is to carry out personnel training, scientific and technological innovation in the fields of hydropower, wind power, bio-energy and solar energy, and to improve the construction of renewable energy disciplines with a hope of building a national scientific and technological innovation and personnel training base in the field of renewable energy. Ms. Dwarshuis said China is a country with a large population, and any measure will have a significant impact on the world’s economy and sustainable development. She hoped the two sides could share experience and jointly develop new energy projects. Director of Environment Management Bureau Brown Ledesma said that the EU was preparing for the second energy agreement, and hoped that China and the Netherlands could be actively involved to achieve cooperation in more areas.

    Ms. Dwarshuis expressed the hope of realizing more exchanges on teachers and students to further promote cooperation and communication.

    Ms. Dwarshuis delivered a speech at the comprehensive academic lecture hall and answered questions raised by the students. The speech covered issues like the new energy exploration and utilization, as well as energy-saving and emission reduction. She offered a list of the Netherlands’ initiatives in new energy development. As for the issues that students are most concerned about, such as the Sino-Dutch cooperation in new energy projects, global sustainable development, and utilization of CCS technology, Ms. Dwarshuis invited director of Environment Management Bureau Brown Ledesma to answer these questions jointly. Ms. Dwarshuis mentioned that the European Union has decided to raise the use of new energy resources by 20 percent, reduce the use of mineral resources by 20 percent and reduce the use of total energy by 20 percent by the year 2020. She said she would do her best to cooperate with the realization of global sustainable development strategy. After her speech, the delegation exchanged gifts with NCEPU leaders and posed for pictures.

    Since 2003 Ms. Dwarshuis was designated as deputy governor of Zuid Holland, from when she has been mainly responsible for water resources and international affairs, including the development and maintenance of waterways, water quality, water sector (water quality monitoring stations), the prevention and control of flood and coastal protection. " To build a green center for the Netherlands", new energy development and utilization, and related European and global affairs constitute the core of her work.

    She is also member of the European Union Committee on Climate Change, district representative of Brussels Regional Committee, member of the Commission on Sustainable Development, President of "European metropolitan networks", President of the Netherlands Red Cross, and member of the "People’s Habitat and Physical Planning Association ". In 1992, she served as a Committee member during the Netherlands Red Cross tour. In 1994, she was elected member of the City Council of Leidschendam Voorburg. From 1998 to 2002, she served as vice mayor of the city.
