Recently, seven teams from Beijing campus of NCEPU won four second prizes and two successful participation prizes in Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Two teams respectively instructed by Li Xiangjie and Yang Guotian from Automation Department won the second prizes and this is the third successive prizes they have won. Meanwhile the team instructed by Prof. Liu Xiangjie won the second prize among those teams which also chose Question A. Tutor Qiu Qirong instructed two teams which won the second and third prizes respectively.

As an international competition, the Mathematical Contest in Modeling is gaining more and more attention in recent years. This year 14 teams of our university won prizes, including 6 teams from Beijing campus ,6 from Baoding campus and 2 teams from scientific and technology college winning two successful participation prizes. Teams from Baoding campus won 3 second prizes and 3 successful participant prizes.

Though the contest happened to be held during the Spring Festival holiday, teachers and team members all came back to work day and night and finally got excellent achievements. “Good honing gives a sharp edge to a sword; bitter cold adds keen fragrance to plum blossom.” Thanks to the patient instructions of our teachers and the hard work of our competitors, this year turned out to be the best year in both the number of participants and the number of the prizes.

Some tutors including Mr. Yang Guotian from Automation Department, encouraged students to participant in the modeling contest to develop their interests in study, explore their potentials and discover excellent young talents. The tutors all agreed that the contest can expand students’ extracurricular knowledge and cultivate their self-educated abilities and sense of team work. Mr. Yang said he was satisfied with the students’ performance in the contest and gratified for their achievements. He also expressed that all the students should be confident and firmly believe that each of us can make advances from the international contests. Our teams consist of students of different majors, so different ways of thinking and study notions make the disciplines blend together and complement each other´s disadvantages. Thus, our strength is increased. However, Mr. Yang sought for greater perfection of the gained achievements and he hoped that the students can strengthen writing abilities, especially English writing, to make up for the deficiency. Mr. Yang believed that with greater efforts all of the students can achieve success.

Leng Yuan, a winner from School of Computer Science and Technology, said she participated in the contest hoping to accumulate practical experience. Though they once complained that they had to end their holiday and came back to school ahead of schedule and were annoyed at the subject selection, they were exited about every small progress and sat up all night to finish the subject. She thought that the cooperation and encouragement between team members was the key for them to finish such a difficult subject in such a short time. In spite of all the painstaking efforts, they all felt happy to be able to work by their hearts. For the students who may take part in this kind of contest in the future, Leng Yuan suggested that they should participate in to acquire the knowledge instead of winning medals. She pointed out that we should believe that full-hearted devotion will guarantee our success and everyone will be rewarded if he or she has made efforts.

The honor our students gained revealed that our university has attached great importance to innovation contest. From these achievements, we can see the teachers’ patient and tireless instruction to students and our students’ painstaking efforts in striving for the top of the contest. Therefore, we are convinced that in the future contests, more students of NECPU can gain glory for our university.
