Energy, Power and Mechanical Engineering

1、History

  School of Energy Power and Mechanical Engineering of North China Electric Power University, formerly known as the Department of Power, was established in 1958. It was one of the departments, which engaged in the earliest teaching and research in the field of thermal energy in China. For more than half a century, the school upholds the spirit of NCEPU - seeking truth, being practical, pioneering and innovating, and constantly nurtures and develops new disciplines, featuring the advantage subjects of NCEPU. In 1978, Department of Mechanical Engineering was hatched and established, which merged with the Department of Power to form the School of Energy and Power Engineering in 2005. The school was renamed the School of Energy Power and Mechanical Engineering in 2009. Department of Environmental Engineering, hatched in 1988, is now the School of Environmental Science and Engineering. Department of Automation Engineering, hatched in 2000, is now the School of Control and Computer Engineering. In 2007, School of Renewable Energy and School of Nuclear Engineering and Technology were hatched and established. In the long-term construction and development, the school has made outstanding contributions to the establishment of a "big power" discipline system and the construction of high-level university in NCEPU.

2、Academic Discipline

  At present, the school has establishedfour first-level disciplines for Master’s Degree: Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Civil Engineering. Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics was authorized to confer Doctoral degree in 2006. The establishment of post-doctoral research station was approved in 2007. In 2011, it was added to first-level key disciplines at the municipal level of Beijing. The secondary discipline Thermo-Engineering was awarded as the national key discipline in 2007. Materials Science and Engineering and Civil Engineering were authorized to confer Master’s Degree in 2010. In 2011, relying on the advantage disciplines of the School of Electrical Engineering and our own, Electric Power Science and Engineering was included in the national advantage discipline innovation platform of “985 project”.

  Through rational planning of disciplinary direction, deepening interdisciplinary, the school formed a discipline layout of "one body and two wings"-Power Engineering and Engineering Thermos-physics as the main body while Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering as the two wings. Aiming at the national needs and international frontier of large-scale thermal power energy-saving and emission reduction and new energy utilization, the school has implemented the "big talent strategy", greatly enhanced the level of discipline, and achieved remarkable results.

3、Faculty

  The school possesses a high-quality teaching staff with a total number of 260 professional teachers, including 1 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 scholar of “the Thousand Talents Plan” of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC , 1 scholar of the “Young and middle-aged leading science and technology innovation talents” of the” National Ten Thousands Talents Plan”, 3 chief scientists of “973” Program, 2 distinguished professors in Chang Jiang Scholars, 3 winners of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Youth, 2 principal investigators of the “Chang Jiang Scholar and Innovation Group Developing Program”, 3 winners of the National Project of “Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand” Professionals, 1 national teaching master, and 3 Beijing teaching masters.

4、Student Education

  The school has four professional directions: Energy and Power Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering. To cultivate technical and management personnel in the energy power field with "solid foundation, high practical ability, and great capability" has been the goal of the school. The undergraduate cultivation scale of Energy and Power Engineering ranks first in the country, and the employment rate ranks top also, earning a reputation of "director professional" and "chief engineer professional" in the energy industry. The graduate education scale of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics also ranks the forefront of the country. Graduate workstations have been built among more than 20 power units. The training quality is remarkable, ranking top in the field of Power Engineering full-time and in-service engineering master enrollment, training, demonstration, etc.

  Representative results of undergraduate education and postgraduate cultivation include the follows.  In 2007, Thermal Energy and Power Engineering was rated as national characteristic specialty, the innovation experimental zone of school-enterprise joint "order - oriented" talent training model was identified as national innovation experimental zone for personnel training, engineering training center was approved as the national experimental teaching demonstration center, and Power Engineering was awarded the national quality course. In 2009, the experimental teaching center for Thermal Energy and Power Engineering was approved as a national experimental teaching demonstration center for Energy and Power. In 2010, Mechanical Engineering and Automation was awarded as the national characteristic specialty, and in the same year, Power Engineering obtained the country's first training qualification for Master of Engineering (equipment supervision direction). In 2011, Thermal Engineering was approved as the country’s first batch of "Excellent Engineer Program" pilot professional. In 2012, the power plant practical teaching personnel training base was approved as the National Engineering Practice Education Center. In the past five years, the school has published 2 national “Twelfth Five-year Plan” projected teaching materials, won 2 awards of Beijing Municipal Higher Education Teaching Achievement and 3 grand prizes in the National College Energy-saving and Emission Reduction Contest.

5、Research

  The school has gradually formed dominant research directions, such as the advanced energy system thermodynamics and integration optimization, multiphase flow and heat and mass transfer, pollutant removal (distinctive in mercury removal), power plant equipment condition monitoring and fault diagnosis.  At present, the school is strengthening the scientific research on combustion and pollutant emissions, aerodynamics of rotating machinery and other directions, and through interdisciplinary, deploying and extending new research directions.

  Relying on the school, National Thermal Power Engineering Research Center, Key Laboratory of Power Plant Equipment Condition Monitoring and Control, Beijing Key Laboratory of Low - grade Energy Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer, and Beijing Key Laboratory of Monitoring and Control of Contaminants in Thermoelectric Production Process have been constructed. Besides, national "Innovative Base to Attract Intellectual of Clean Conversion and Efficient Utilization of Coal" was also constructed.

    In recent years, the school has undertaken several scientific projects of “973 Program” from the Ministry of Science and Technology. They are “Basic Research   on Process Energy Saving of Large-scale Coal-fired Generating Units"(Chief Scientist, Professor Yang Yongping), “Basic Research on Deep Utilization of Waste Heat of Boiler Flue Gas” (Chief Scientist, Professor Xu Jinliang), “Basic Research on Energy Efficient and Clean Utilization of Coal - fired Power Generation System” (Chief Scientist, Professor Yang Yongping). In addition, the school has also undertaken a number of national and local research projects, won the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award (“Optimized Design and Operation of Air Cooling System for Large-Scale Thermal Power Units and Its Application”, first completed by Professor Yang Yongping) and the first prize of The Ministry of Education Natural Science Award (“Fundamental Study on Multiphase Flow, Heat and Mass Transfer at Micro - Nano Scale”, first completed by Professor Xu Jinliang), making great contributions to energy-saving and emission reduction of the country and industry.
