Drama Troupe of NCEPU Won Three Top Prizes in the 3rd China Campus Theatre Festival

       During the 3rd China Campus Theatre Festival, “Century Cyclotron”, the work of NCEPU Drama Troupe, won the Award for Excellent Dramas, the Award for Campus Drama Stars and the Outstanding Organization Award with its professional guidance, profound content and the outstanding acting skills.

       China Campus Theatre Festivalwas initiated for the implementation of On Strengthening and Improving College Students' Ideological and Political Education issued by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, and the promotion of campus culture and the establishment of a better cultural environment for the college students. It is co-sponsored biennially in Shanghai by China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipal Government, and presented by Chinese Dramatists Association, Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education and Shanghai Dramatic Society. Compared with locally held drama festivals, China Campus Theatre Festival boasts two unique features: Firstly, it is the only national level Campus Theatre Festival co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and other departments, so it is of high standards; Secondly, the “Chinese Drama Award · Campus Drama Prize”, a National literature and art permanent award is awarded biennially by the Chinese Dramatists Association and it is the top Campus Award established by our state.

       The theme of the 3rd Campus Theatre Festival is “Charming Campus ·Flying Youth”. A total number of 132 dramas submitted by 91 colleges and universities and one secondary middle school from 28 provinces and municipalities during the preliminary contest, reaching a record high. And it is the first time that a senior middle school has submitted a play. Finally, 22 full-scale dramas and 11 sketches submitted by 33 colleges and universities entered the final round, including some professional colleges like Central Academy of Drama, Communication University of China. Shanghai Theater Academy and some prominent universities like Fudan University, Zhejiang University and Xiamen University. And NCEPU, as the only Non-professional University, competed fiercely with these colleges and universities on the very same stage.

       Guanghehu Drama troupe of NCEPU arrived in Shanghai on Oct.19th under the guidance of the leading teacher Wang Yue. Rigorous and modest as they are, all the members cherished their chances to learn from other contestants and to do rehearsals, hoping to perfect their cooperation with each other as well as their performances.

       On the evening of Oct.21st, the drama “Century Cyclotron”, performed by our troupe was staged in Shanghai Normal University. The basic clue of this drama is that a Chinese college student is telling American students the Chinese history. Through different scenes, like the War at Zhulu between Yan Emperor and Huang Emperor, Emperor and the Assassin, the War between Liu Bei and Xiang Yu, the history and the role of the four great inventions in Human history was vividly presented. During the first half of the drama, the humorous acting of the three actors made the audience rolled in the aisles. When talking about the invention of gunpowder, the atmosphere suddenly changed, and the hundred-year history of humiliation stroke the chord of the audience.China changed from a lion into a vulnerable lamb. With the solemn and stirring music on, there came a moment of silence in the audience. Finally, a bell ring brought the audience into reality, and the song My Chinese Heart sung by the three actors brought the gala to its climax.

       Century Cyclotron, under the professional guidance of Prof. Wang Yue, combines the Peking Opera and some popular elements. Through the performance of Sang Ji, Zheng Boqian, Su Bosheng and other crew members, it brings people to the meditation of China’s history and helps to cultivate the patriotism of the college students.
