On April 23, leaders and scholars from the Embassy of Canada, University of Regina in Canada, Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, State Grid Energy Research Institute and China Electric Power Research Institute participated in the opening ceremony of China-Canada Institute of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (China-Canada IEES)in NCEPU, which was presided over by Vice-President Yang Yongping, and they also discussed education and research cooperation between China and Canada in energy, environment and sustainable development.
First, Vice-President of University of Regina Fitzpatrick and President of SaskPower Company Robert Watson led their teams to visit National Engineering Laboratory for Biomass Power Generation Equipment, Laboratory of Monitoring and Control of Heavy Metal Pollutants and State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electrical Power System with Renewable Energy Sources.
Afterwards, Director of School Affairs Commission Wu Zhigong, Vice-President Yang Yongping met the guests from the government and enterprises, including Deputy Director of Canadian Embassy Miss Tang Lan and embassy staffs, Vice-President of University of Regina Fitzpatrick and relevant responsible officials, President of SaskPower Company Robert Watson and his entourage, and who came over to participate in the opening ceremony, Deputy Director of International Center For Economic And Technical Exchanges of Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China Wang Weili, Vice-President of State Grid Energy Research Institute Hu Zhaoguang, and Chief Engineer of Electric Power System Research Institute of China Electric Power Research InstituteLi Yalou.
Next, all the leaders congratulated on the establishment of China-Canada IEES, and affirmed their achievements of recent years. Secretary Wu said, the establishment of the institute not only provided scientific support for solving energy problems in our country's development, but also played an important role in promoting the development of energy, environment and sustainability research disciplines.
Director of China-Canada Institute of Energy and Environmental Sustainability in University of ReginaHuang Guohe indicated that, the establishment of the institute marked that the two universities had upgraded from personnel exchange and training to research cooperation. Vice-President Yang Yongping and Vice-president of University of Regina Fitzpatrick signed a supplemental agreement which would further promote bilateral cooperation. Then Secretary Wu and Vice-President Fitzpatrick inaugurated for China-Canada IEES.

University of Regina in Canada was a public research university with a hundred years history. It was prominent in the education and research of sustainable environment and energy. NCEPU had been in cooperation with University of Regina since 2005. During the seven years, these two universities cooperated in teacher exchanges, joint training of the graduates, etc. The Canadian personnel, including Special Assistant to the President of University of Regina Bob Schad, Director of China & Canada Institute of Energy and Environment Sustainable Development of University of Regina Huang Heguo, President of Faculty of Engineering of University of Regina Paitoon Tontiwachwuthikul, Associate Professor of Faculty of Engineering of University of Regina Fanhua Zeng,Chief of Staff of China & Canada Institute of Energy and Environment Sustainable Development of University of Regina Jocelyn Crivea, Vice-President of SaskPower Company and President of Carbon Capture and Storage ProjectMike Monea, Official of SaskPower CompanyDonna Dressler, Director of Canadian Petroleum Technology Research Centre Malcolm Wilson, Commercial Counselor and Commercial Officer of Embassy of Canada Huang Hanqiang, Second Secretary of Embassy of Canada Li Kan, Commercial Officer of Embassy of Canada Zhang Ke, and Chinese personnel, including Dean of Environment Engineering & Science School Zhao Yi, Dean of Human & Social Science School Cai Limin, Division Chief Yang Jingjing, Deputy Dean of Resource & Environment Research Institute Li Yongping, Division Chief of International Cooperation Office Liu Yongqian, Deputy Chief of International Cooperation Office Xu Lingling, and teachers and students from Energy & Environment Research Institute, Human & Social Science School and International Education School attended the opening ceremony. In the afternoon, all the representatives from Professional School, School-Enterprise Cooperation Office, Science and Technology Department and International Cooperation Office, Electric Power Systems Research Institute of China Electric Power Research Institute, and Huadian Power International Corporation Limited, University of Regina, SaskPower Company held a seminar on in-depth cooperation and understanding, which enhanced mutual understanding and the long-term development.
