The 2011 Smart Grid World Forum was held by State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) in partnership with IEEE from September 28 to 29 in Beijing, featuring the theme “Strong & Smart Grid — The Driving Force for Energy Development in the 21st Century”. The conference is designed to be another high-level event held in Beijing focusing on grid development with a large-scale coverage and far-reaching influence. Shu Yinbiao, vice president of SGCC presided the forum, which was attended by Qian Zhimin, Deputy Director of National Energy Administration, Cao Jianlin, deputy minister of Ministry of Science and Technology, Yang Xueshan, vice director of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Chong Quan, member of the Party Committee of Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Liu Zhenya, SGCC president, Zhong Jun, president of China Southern Power Grid. Zhang Dejiang, vice premier of the State Council, passed congratulation on behalf of the Chinese Government and expressed his expectations on the event. President Liu Jizhen and Yang Qixun, member of both Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, also made speeches at the forum. President Liu Jizhen delivered the speech titled “Safe, Effective and Massive Use of New Energy Electric Power in Smart Grid”. He thought that renewable energy such as wind power and solar energy present great challenge to the current electric power system, and therefore intelligent integration and other measures should be taken to utilize renewable energy safely and efficiently. Mr. Yang Qixun also made a speech “Actively Respond to challenges and Accelerate Construction of Smart Grid”. He believed that Smart Grid, enough energy storage facilities and information technology were indispensible to deal with large-scale fluctuation of traditional power system. The speeches of President Liu Jizhen and Yang Qixun received widespread attention, and State Grid News published the abstract of President Liu’s speech. During the forum, President Liu communicated with president of SGCC Liu Zhenya and Gordon Day, chairman of IEEE. Other representatives spoke high of NCEPU’s development and achievement in smart grid, and expected a bright future. 400 representatives from governments, organizations and enterprises of 16 countries and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Telecommunication Union participated the forum, who were dedicated to communication and cooperation in Smart Grid to promote sustainable development of electric power in the world.
