April at NCEPU is represented by a sunlit and enchanting scene of spring. On 20th, April, the report “Listening, Inspiration and Growth------Our President and Me” was held at the assembly hall where about 1,400 students spend a happy afternoon with President Liu Jizhen. Meanwhile, deputy secretary of the leading party group Hao Yingjie, related leaders from the Party School Office, the Student Affairs Office, the Youth League Committee and different schools and students listened respectfully to this brilliant report.

    Beginning with “the Past, the Present and the Future of North China Electric Power University”, President Liu first gave a brief review of the passed 50 years of NCEPU. NCEPU was founded at Xiaoying, Qinghe in 1958 called Beijing Electric Power Institute, moved to Handan, Hebei Province in 1969, then removed to Baoding in 1970 and changed the name to Hebei Electric Power Institute. In the year of 1978 when it got its name as North China Electric Power Institute, NCEPU was designated by the former State Council as a key university in China and started recruiting all around the nation. In 1998, with the approval by the State Education Committee, NCEPU was formed with the main campus in Baoding and the other in Beijing.

    In March, 2003, NCEPU was transferred from former State Electric Power Company to the Ministry of Education. From that time, NCEPU became a university directly under the supervision and management of the Ministry of Education and a board composed of State Grid Corporation of China, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd, China Huaneng Group, China Datang Corporation, China Huadian Corporation, China Guodian Corporation and China Power Investment Corporation. In September, 2005, NCEPU was officially listed on “211 Project” and the main campus, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, re-settled in Beijing in October, symbolizing the beginning of substantial integrated management.     
    Then, President Liu introduced the achievement that NCEPU has made in recent years in discipline construction, environment construction, scientific research, talent cultivation and school spirit and style of study construction.  
    Liu pointed out that our goal was to make NCEPU strong enough among high universities with the help of all the faculties and students, but our major problem was to build and reform professional discipline system. Used to be an institute, NCEPU served the power industry for a period of time. However, the new situation asked the university to follow educational rules, adjust to national development strategies and build a new discipline system. Therefore, NCEPU proposed “Trans-Power” discipline system, which was based on traditional superior disciplines, put stress on new energy disciplines supported by arts and science. From 2002, NCEPU set up hydropower and nuclear power majors, built the first wind power engineering major in the nation, and then established the first renewable engineering school in China. At present, NCEPU, with engineering as its cockpit and other disciplines like liberal arts, science, economy, management and law, has become a key university to serve the society with distinctive features in power. The new “433” discipline distribution system has laid a solid foundation for further development of NCEPU.   
    As for environment construction, the main campus covers an area of over 66.7 hectares in the suburb Beijing after expanding eastward, then westward and eastward twice. Meanwhile, each school has its own building and each professor his/her own office after the completion of the 180,000 ㎡main building, which is the first phase of the west campus construction project 
    In recent years, great improvement has been achieved in teacher training. Thanks to the policy to cultivate young teachers with a standard of more Ph. D candidates, more international and more engineers, the number of teachers with doctor’s degree has been increased. What’s more, NCEPU puts every effort to introduce outstanding talents listed on “Thousand Project” of our nation and “Hundred Project” of China Academy of Engineering, and Ph. D candidates from famous international universities.    
    He also stressed that school spirit and style of study construction has played a role of great importance in achieving comprehensive development. Since a university has been a place where students can acquire knowledge, improve technique skills, perfect personality and pursue truth, the problem of how to build a good campus culture, daily conditions and school spirit and study style remains of critical significance. President Liu spoke highly of the progress NCEPU has made in school spirit and study style and a harmonious campus culture has been taking into shape. 
    Moreover, he once again emphasized that the major student affairs at NCEPU should be grasping style of study, stressing rewarding and assisting and focusing on employment so as to make substantial effects.
    Then, President Liu gave a general idea of the bright future of NCEPU. As the society expectation of education has been rapidly increased, NCEPU with the aim of constructing a high-level university should have a sense of crisis and urgency to implement the Three-Step strategy and reach the Six-Fundamental Goals. Under good external conditions such as the steady development of energy power, a good deal of attention paid on higher education and more requirements on quality education, NCEPU would have a sound and fast development and a better future as well.      
    During the second part of the report, President Liu combined national development with our university and put forward ardent expectations and demand for students.
    First, hold a good attitude towards life. The four-year campus life is quite valuable in our life and is the golden age since we are full of vigor and vitality. During this period of time, students should not slack off after the high pressure at high school but should set a clear and definite objective of struggle for our campus life.
    Secondly, bear hardship and stand hard work. University life should be a time to struggle more than a time to enjoy. Since the trip of gaining knowledge is tough, there is no doubt that every successful man has an arduous study experience. We must keep firmly in mind that just like plum blossom incense from the bitter cold, we should surmount difficulties to struggle for our ideals.
    Thirdly, grasp ourselves. University students at present should stand up to all the allure in society. The main reason why many students get addicted to internet is the lack of self-control. What’s more, as for other temptations, we’d better prefer to nip an evil in the bud and take a second consideration before action in order to make correct analyses and judgments from the angle of development law rather than listen to rumors and gossips.    
    Forthly, learn how to study. Learning is to find out how to acquire knowledge and grasp new skills. President Liu stressed that either theoretical study or practice study, acquiring knowledge covered only a part, but it was more important to gain the ability of how to learn than simply acquiring knowledge. During daily study and life, we can not only learn from books and teachers, but also learn from each other and our surroundings so as to form study into a habit and spirit to hold a favorable desire of study and consciousness of learning.  
    He also stated that at the same time of study, we should pay attention to moral construction of our own so as to gain a comprehensive development in morality, intelligence and physical strength. He hoped that we could become useful young people responsible for both our family and the society and that those excellent students could set good examples to school spirit and study style construction.
    At the end of the report, President Liu extempore answered the questions asked by students at the hall.
    President Liu’s report was so vivid, fabulous and informative that more than 1,400 students at present burst into thunderous applause. Yao Yang, graduate from Economy and Management School, told excitedly “We seem to be burning with righteous indignation when listening to President Liu’s report, which makes us confident about and proud of our university. During this report, more than 12 applauses can be heard among us.” Wang Qinghua, Director of the Student Affairs Office said “On one hand, President Liu’s report gives a comprehensive introduction of the history, present situation and the future of NCEPU, on the other hand, it is expected that students could gain from the tortuous but proud history enlightenment------the glorious past was, under the guidance of NCEPU spirit, a result of the hard work of faculty of several generations at NCEPU; in the future, all the student should make progress in both your academic study and your career to carry forward the NCEPU spirit as so to be elites in the society and pillars of the state.”
