Graduation Ceremony and Degree Awarding for Postgraduates

The graduation ceremony and degree awarding for postgraduates of 2010 was held on April 1 in the venerable auditorium of the main building. Attended were Wu Zhigong, Party Secretary, doctoral supervisor and researcher, Professor Liu Jizhen, President, Chairman of the academic degree evaluation committee and doctoral supervisor, Professor An Liansuo, Li Heming and Yang Yongping, Vice President and doctoral supervisor, Professor Li Shuangchen, Deputy Secretary, Hao Yingjie, Deputy Secretary and researcher and Vice President Sun Pingsheng.

    President Liu Jizhen conferred degree on 2105 postgraduates of 2010 and made a keynote speech. The ceremony was presided over by Vice President Yang Yongping. Present also were representatives from related functional departments, academic schools and supervisors.

    The ceremony started at 8:30 with everyone standing up and singing the national anthem of China.

    To begin, President An Liansuo read out the name list of degree awarding decided by the university academic degree evaluation committee, quoting that the sixth and seventh plenary session of the third NCEPU academic degree evaluation committee have deliberated and approved to grant 113 students doctoral degree and 1992 students master’s degree respectively.
    In the ensuing ceremony, Professor Bi Tianshu, doctoral supervisor from electrical and electronic engineering school, addressed on behalf of all supervisors. She was quoted as saying: “the graduate diploma and degree certificate you are about to get are evidences of the necessary basic knowledge and skills you have obtained for future work. Graduating means a new beginning and further pursuing. You should never stop learning and accumulating more knowledge and skills in your future work and practice. I hope that, by connecting your personal goal to the development of the country and need of people, you will strive to innovate and always stand at the forefront of the times to win honor for our Alma Mater. I hope that, besides being responsible, caring and grateful, you can also shoulder your social responsibility and make contribution to development of China’s energy and power industry. I hope that, by maintaining and developing NCEPU study style of “unity, industry, truth-seeking and innovation”, you will continue to learn with an open and pioneering mind and become the backbone of your company soon. I hope that, after graduating from NCEPU, you will continue to care for and support your Alma Mater. The school is proud of you, so are us supervisors. You will always have our blessings. Wish you smooth and happy life!
    Yu Yue, on behalf of all the graduating students, made a speech. She said: “Time flies. Today, when this ceremony concludes, our NCEPU time will become the past. Nevertheless, the NCEPU spirit has etched deeply in our soul and will become great treasure in the rest of our lives. Here, we pledge to hold grateful hearts, never forget what our teachers have taught us, aim highly, work hard in the future and live a healthy fulfilled life to hand in a satisfactory answer sheet to the nation, the society and NCEPU.”
    Zhao Wei, representative of postgraduates still at school, extended their heartfelt congratulations on the seniors’ graduation. He said: “NCEPU is a lifetime honor and calling card. The seniors will carry on the NCEPU spirit as “perseverance, solidarity, devotion and eminence” in different fields, and, with outstanding character and morals that NCEPU has imparted to them, they will fight hard on their way to success, achieving glories one after another. They have set good examples for us with their motto “study hard, research-involved, brave innovation and aim highly”. We should follow their step to focus on our study and research and, with sweat and perspiration, make a perfect ending to postgraduate life with a high-quality dissertation and our due contribution to the construction of a high-quality university.”

    Next, the school leaders awarded certificates and prizes to representatives of outstanding graduates and winners of Excellent Doctoral and Master Dissertation, and graduate diplomas to representatives of the 2010 graduates.
Liu Jizhen, Chairman of academic degrees evaluation committee and doctoral supervisor, made an important speech.
    First of all, President Liu, on behalf of NCEPU, expressed congratulations to the graduates on their complete study and conveyed appreciations to all the supervisors and teaching and administrative staff for their hard word and the parents and relatives for their support and concern.
    He said that, with ideal and expectation, students came to NCEPU for higher education three years ago. As a member of NCEPU, we went throw thick and thin together and sided by sided to make progress. We received well education and edification from NCEPU, and at the same time, we made our own contribution to the great-leap-forward development of NCEPU. The basic task of this university is to train creative talents with high level and high quality. The school attaches great importance to the training of postgraduates, further defines the guiding principals as “to improve the quality of education as the core, develop students’ creative ability as the key point, improve school conditions and strengthen management”, steadily carries out reform of postgraduate training mechanism, energetically expand education space and resources. As a result, the practice and innovation ability of postgraduate have increased significantly. The training quality also sees great improvement. A lot of students have participated in the scientific research program of national, local and enterprise level with the guides from supervisors, made important research achievement and obtained many awards of national scientific and technological achievements, patents and software copyrights.
    President Liu also pointed out that students not only have witnessed China’s rapid development, but also the great changes of NCEPU. With the joint efforts of all staff members and students, NCEPU has obtained symbolized achievements, significantly improved its academic level and comprehensive strength, basically realized the transformation from teaching oriented institutes to teaching-research oriented, from the single and applicative subject system to multi-disciplinary and research oriented, from traditional and experience-oriented management to open and scientific style. These three transformations have marked a solid pace made by NCEPU on the way of a high quality university with distinctive features. Nowadays, the development strategy of building an innovation-oriented country brings forward higher requests on high education. Meanwhile, with the fossil energy exhausting, such main concerns as energy shortage, climate change, and environmental pollution have been brought into common focus. Developing low-carbon economy, smart grid and doing new energy research have reached consensus in energy trade. This provides rare opportunities to NCEPU----a university features energy and electricity, and new requirements of development. Facing new conditions and new opportunities, on the basis of study and practice of the Scientific Outlook of Development, NCEPU scientifically provides a roadmap of future development, further defines and puts forward development strategy of “three steps” and “six strategic tasks” in order to build a high level university. In new historical time, according to the guide of the Scientific Outlook of Development, NCEPU would continue to emancipate our minds, freshen up our ideas, put institutional reform and innovation in various aspects, and strengthen our own features of energy to put forward sound and fast development in all aspects. We firmly believe that, with the arduous effort of the whole school, the goal of building high level university would come true in the near future.
    President Liu made three wishes and requirements on the 2010 graduates:
    First, I hope that you aim highly and have the courage to take great responsibility. Nowadays, the world is undergoing profound changes and our country is facing not only unprecedented development opportunities, but also more severe challenges. As the national trained high-level talents, your knowledge and ability make clear that you will shoulder the historical important mission to bring about the great rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation. I hope that you cherish dreams and aim highly to link your ideals, values and knowledge with the national destiny, keep consistent and forge ahead to achieve great success and the value of life in the waves of reform and opening up and economic development. I hope that you will become a person brave of taking responsibilities, full of confidence and hard-working, to make contribution to the prosperity of the country and the development of China’s energy power utilities.
    Secondly, I hope you will keep lifelong learning and make bold innovations. Constant pursuit of truth and brave creativity is the vitality to maintain intellectual vigor. I hope you keep passion and motivation of studying and creating, establish lifelong learning sense and constantly urge yourselves to make further progress while taking initiative and active practice, learning during practice, growing up and geting improved in practical work, and concentrating on your own work  to make great careers. I hope that you will extend the fine style of study and initiative spirit endowed by the university to work and keep forging ahead, shaping and improving the cultivation of personality, to be talents possessing both integrity and ability.
    Thirdly, I hope you unite and cooperate, and keep on in knowledge and action. The development of economy and advancement of technology is laying increasing emphasis on team sense and team spirit. To succeed in a career, you must be open-minded and magnanimous, pay attention to cultivating the overall situation awareness and team spirit, forgive others but not yourself, and learn tolerance and appreciation. I also hope that you will learn knowledge in practice, seek truth and pragmatism, come down to earth, keep persistent, serve the motherland and serve the people with your own youth, intelligence and perspiration to better promote the development of cause.
    At last, President Liu noted that NCEPU’s spirit--“Perseverance, Solidarity, Devotion, Eminence” carrying the university’s rich historical tradition and deep human spirit, is the life creed and common pursuit of each NCEPU student. I hope that after graduation, you will maintain the excellent qualities conferred by Alma master, continue to care for and support the development and construction of Alma master, create new achievements in the new journey, win more honors for the university and make greater contribution to the society. NCEPU will always be your spiritual home and strong backing, and look forward to your good news from all directions!
    President Liu awarded degrees to the 2010 postgraduates in bright rite march. The audience expressed heartfelt congratulations to all graduates of doctoral or master’s degree amid enthusiastic applause.
