On March 23, Edward Clarke and Sarah Verth from UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council visited our school and were warmly received by Liu Xiangqian, Director of the International Cooperation Department, and his party. An academic symposium was held afterwards at the conference room of the International Cooperation Department.

At the academic symposium, Professor Huang Guohe, Liushi, Duan Liqiang, Zhang Kai and Dr. Xu Gang introduced the progress their research teams had achieved in CCS (CO2 capture and storage) research as well as the direction of their future research respectively. After that, Sarah Verth introduced the working mechanism and the general situation of RCUK (Research Council UK). And Edward Clarke introduced the working mechanism, application and evaluation process of EPSRC. He also made a brief introduction of the international cooperation of EPSRC, especially the cooperation between EPSRC and China. Later, The two sides exchanged opinions on such issues as cultural difference, scientific research and potential areas of cooperation, in the hope of further promoting the cooperation in various areas, especially in CCS research.
After that, the two sides exchanged thoughts on other areas. Professor Liu Yongqian said that international cooperation usually took two steps: first, the two parties have to enhace mutual understanding and find out the subjects of common interset; then the two parties can carry out scientific research together. Edward Clarke agreed on that opinion, expressing that not only professors but also students could take part in this kind of symposium. Both sides agreed that mutual understanding of different cultures was essential in international cooperation and academic exchange could be better promoted by experts with rich overseas experience.
The exchange is beneficial to both sides. They have gained a lot in academic research, broadened their eyesight and had a better idea on how to implement international cooperation. We hereby hope that the two sides make joint efforts to achieve more successful international cooperation between China and UK.
