The declaration and evaluation of 2008 National Basic Research Program (973 Plan) have come to an end. After evaluated by experts, 74 projects have been approved to initiate, among which 10 are of agricultural field, 9 in the field of energy, 8 in the field of information, 7 in the field of resources and environment, 14 in the field of population and health, 7 in the field of materials, 10 in the integrated cross-cutting field and 9 in the field of important cutting-edge science. According to the unified arrangements of the National Science and Technology, these projects will be implemented in 2009. "973 Plan" was established in 1997 by the State Ministry of Science and Technology, and it aimed at strengthening original innovation and solving major scientific problems of national economic and social development at a deeper level and a wider range, so as to enhance China´s capability on independent innovation and problems solving and provide scientific support for national development. From its start in 1998 to 2008, "973 Plan" has set up a total of 456 projects, and has appointed 451 project chief scientists.
With Yang Yongping as the chief scientist, the project named “Basic Research on Energy-saving of Large-scale Coal-fired Generating Units" (No.2009CB219900) has obtained financial support. This is the first "973 Plan" project of NCEPU and professor Yang Yongping is the first "973 Plan" project chief scientist of NCEPU. It is a major breakthrough and a new progress in building our university into a research oriented university.
