The Commencement and Degree Conferral Ceremony Held in NCEPU

On the morning of June 17th, the 2008 commencement and degree conferral ceremony for undergraduates were held in front of Teaching Building One and the Lecture Hall respectively in NCEPU. The ceremonies, presided over by Yang Yongping (vice-president of NCEPU), were attended by school leaders including Wu Zhigong, Liu Jizhen, Zhang Jinhui, Li Heming, Li Chengrong, Li Shuangchen, Hao Yingjie, and Sun Pingsheng. Members of the academic degree evaluation committee, chairmen of branch committees of each school, leaders of each school, and all undergraduates were also present. This year, another amount of students have finished their study and gained degrees, starting their journey from NCEPU to the society.

    President Liu Jizhen delivered a speech at the commencement, extending his congratulations to the 4933 undergraduates who would start their new journey in life and his thanks to all the teachers who had strived hard to cultivate those students.

    President Liu believed the time spent in college is a crucial period to temper will and mold personality that will never be forgotten. During the four years, the students sweat and strive in every corner of the campus, and their hard work deserves reward. Up to now, 1430 students have become members of the CPC, 1073 have gained rewards of the state or provincial level, 158 are model “Three-good” students, and 270 have won the honor of “Excellent Graduates”. Besides, about 100 students won awards in all kinds of competitions and contests. Those students won honor for the university, and the university is proud of what they have done.

    President Liu reviewed the development of NCEPU. The university entered the “211 projects”, gained excellence in the Education Evaluation of the Undergraduate Course, and the discipline construction, state key disciplines in particular, obtained common recognition. Campus construction, including the construction of synthetical building, is in progress, and the university matches forward steadily in discipline construction, teaching and researching, production-learning-research cooperation. According to incomplete statistics, the admission scores raise again this year. Starting from three departments and a few hundred teachers and students, NCEPU has become a state key “211 projects” university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education. Everybody here has made great achievements through their excellent work.

    President Liu confirmed that NCEPU was becoming a high-level university through the past half century. In recent years, the university seeks large-scale and beneficial development in both quality and structure by sticking to scientific development view and connotation. Based on traditional dominant disciplines including electricity and dynamics, the university quickens the pace to construct new disciplines such as hydraulic, wind, nuclear and biomass power generation, and builds a “giant power” subject system based on new energy and supported by sciences and arts. In order to build a responsible university, NCEPU makes great efforts to promote “quality project”, “talent project” and “innovative project” by educational innovation and strong management, trying to cultivate students by noble virtues, sound knowledge, and great scientific ideal. All these lead us to believe that NCEPU is heading towards a high-level university.

    Since this university employed several excellent undergraduates as alumni contactors for the first time, President Liu explained the relation between alumni and the development of the university, and emphasized the link among the university, the alumni and the society. In western developed countries, 1/3 or even higher running fund comes from successful alumni, and many universities are famous for the contribution made by their alumni. With the social and economic development, alumni will also play a significant role in the development of universities. NCEPU laid great emphasis on contact with alumni, since they connected the university and the society. He believed that alumni were indispensable in setting up the brand, carrying forward the spirit and promoting the course of a university.

    As for the 50th anniversary of NCEPU, President Liu thought fifty years, a relatively short period in the history was a great chance for us to summarize experiences, exhibit achievements, and carry forward our spirit. Meanwhile, we would promote a better development of the university by striving for more support and condensing more power. The 50th anniversary would be successful with the effort of teachers and students on campus and all the graduates.

    Finally, President Liu said that the school leaders really wanted to see success and progress of graduates. The university would welcome graduates anytime. In the autumn of 2008, he hoped all graduates could attend the 50th anniversary, reviewing the past and mediating the future. He expected that graduates would make constant progress in their work.

    On behalf of all the teachers, Professor Ai Xin, vice-dean of Electrical & Electronic Engineering School made a speech to show the congratulations and held out hope for all the graduates:

    First, hope all the graduates to be broad-minded and patient talents. It has been proved by the famous psychologist Abrabam H. Maslow that attitudes determine our habits, which also determine our life. Since society is a stage full of uncertainties, you graduates should keep a positive mind to adapt to it. I want to give you four suggestions: first, be thankful. We shall always be grateful to our parents for raising us, to our teachers for guiding us, to our friends and fellows for caring and helping us, to our country for providing sound environment; second, keep a positive mind. Involve yourselves fully in the life and work, learn how to get on well with each other and construct a good working and living atmosphere; third, maintain a quiet and peaceful mind. You should learn to accept failures in a competition, to meet frustration when coping with challenges, and to overcome risks when trying new things. Competition, challenge and innovation are three key words for a person who makes a success of living; fourth, keep open-minded. Being young people in the new century, you should have an open mind to tolerate others, learn from others and help others.

    Second, hope you to become honest and virtuous talents. To be honest is the traditional Chinese virtue. 200 year before, German philosopher Rousseau Kant said：“There are two things in the world, that we are look up long time, arising the love in our heart——one is gorgeous sky up our head, another is our mind”. The past events of a country or nation are called history, while the past record of a individual are called resume. A dishonest record will be kept in the resume for a whole life. Of course, honesty is not only a virtue, but also a symbol of strength and confidence. Positive thinking, ambition and attitudes are the basis of honesty. As the old Chinese saying, “one might have learned the doctrine earlier than the other, or might be a master in his own special field”, we can never be better than others in every respects. We are honest, because we are powerful.

    Third, hope you to be ones who always keep alma mater in mind and win glory for our university. With our joint efforts, our university has made great progress in every aspect, and it will make greater contribution to the development of our society, especially in the field of electric power. Fish can swim in the waters as they will and birds can fly in the sky as they do! Wish you all good luck and make achievements in the new post, and become talents who are useful to our country.

    At last, on behalf of all the teachers, Professor Ai Xin encouraged the graduates to create a bright future by youth and wisdom.

    Liu Chang, an electric power engineering major, who was awarded “Beijing Excellent Graduates of 2008”, made a speech on behalf of all the graduates to express sincere gratitude and great respect to the teachers for their diligent working.  He said, “We will always remember the teachers’ guidance, students’ accompany, dining hall’s delicious meal. Led by our university’s elite education and ideas of cultivating innovative talents, we got the ability of independent thinking and autonomous learning. We lay great emphasis on integrating expertise, innovation with social practice so as to adapt to our nation’s needs. “Running a university high responsible for the nation, society and students” is a firm promise made by the NCEPU. Under its direction, we understand and make clear our social characters and learn how to shoulder the responsibility. We will always keep the school spirit of “Perseverance, Solidarity, Devotion and Eminence” in mind. Wherever we are in the future, we will be pride of being a NCEPU student.

    Liu Chang also express his belief that NCEPU will accomplish the mission of building a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary internationalized and research-oriented university with great standing and definitely has a brilliant future.

    After the degree conferral ceremony, the graduates took photos with leaders, teachers, classmates and relatives on campus. NCEPU once witnessed their efforts and giving, and now it is witnessing their success and acquisition.
