Working Conference of Alumni Associations Held in NCEPU

On the afternoon of June 14th, the first working conference of executive council chairmen and general secretaries was held in the multi-functional hall of International Exchange Center. Participated in the meeting were school leaders of NCEPU, including Wu Zhigong, Liu Jizhen, Zhang Jinhui, Li Heming, Li Chengrong, Li Shuangchen, Yang Yongping, and Sun Pingsheng, as well as board executive council chairmen, general secretaries and representatives of alumni from alumni associations in different cities. During the conference, issues of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of NECPU and the term election for the council of general alumni council were discussed, the work of past five years since its foundation was reviewed, and the future working plans and contents were explored. Wu Zhigong (secretary of the Party) addressed to the participants, Liu Jizhen (headmaster of NCEPU) delivered an important speech, Zhang Jinhui (deputy secretary of the Party) introduced the preparation of the 50th anniversary of NCEPU, and Chu Jingchun (head of the alumni office) also submitted a report on relevant work at the conference presided by vice president Li Heming. The Beijing Alumni Association issued a proposal to call on associations of other cities to strengthen connection, support the construction and development of NCEPU, and actively respond to and participate in the 50th anniversary.

    Wu Zhigong said in his speech that alumni were important resource and precious wealth of NCEPU. Over the past several years, alumni who made arduous effort searching cooperation with NCEPU created sound social and economic benefit by making use of talents and research advantage; it also played an important role in emphasizing school features, improving teaching quality, accelerating transformation of research results, enlarging cooperation of study and research, and increasing the graduate employment rate. Therefore, the wisdom and hard work of alumni made much sense in every key developing period of NCEPU. Ever since its foundation in 2003, NCEPU general alumni association has made great efforts to guide alumni to return to Alma Mater and help develop their own career through careful work, so that the connection between graduates and NCEPU can be strengthened and interaction be promoted. As the 50th anniversary is around the corner, Mr. Wu expected that the alumni support the preparation by making active use of their own advantages, and hoped that all the alumni associations strengthen self-construction and build wider platforms for the development of both the university and all alumni.

    President Liu also thought that the support of alumni associations and alumni is indispensible for the rapid development of the university, and their support for education and care for the university is an important supporting point and economic source. Universities with splendid records, from home and abroad, all got support from their alumni. Then he explained the irreplaceable role that the alumni associations have played for the past many years from the following perspectives.

    Firstly, the foundation of university brand and spread of its spirit need the effort of alumni. During the past many years, the university brand has been established in cultivating high quality talents, which is closed related to the great economic and social benefit created by alumni of NCEPU. The university spirit also becomes famous as the alumni go to different places.

    Secondly, the alumni’s full-hearted participants in school affairs are indispensible. For the past 50 years, it was with the great support of alumni that NCEPU confidently set the long-term goal of building a multi-disciplinary, research-oriented, internationalized and high-level university. In addition, alumni should respond actively to the proposal raised to strengthen their connection and promote mutual development of all the alumni associations.

    President Liu exhorted meaningfully that both graduates and students on campus are the main force of the 50th anniversary of NCEPU. He hoped that the alumni could unit together to celebrate the 50th anniversary as hosts of the university and quicken the pace of this university to a research-oriented, internationalized and high-level university.

    Besides, Zhang Jinhui (deputy secretary of the Party) introduced the preparation of the 50th anniversary by reporting in details the guiding ideology, theme, principle, organizations and their division of responsibility, the working plan and progress. Chu Jingchun (head of the alumni office) made a report summarizing their work from the five perspectives of organization construction, system construction, platform for connection, activity forms, and support for university construction, and deployed the work of this year.

    Shi Yubo, vice president of the State Power Regulatory Commission, delivered an excellent speech at the conference. He held that NCEPU had passed through a glorious course over the past 50 years during which great development was witnessed in subject construction, talents cultivation, scientific research items and foreign exchanges in this university. With the rapid development of the power industry in China, the need for talents will increase greatly. He hoped that NCEPU could strive to be a first-class electric power university in the world by energizing teaching, helping students, and strengthening basis and ability with the 50th anniversary as a chance. Wang Yonggan and Zhang Chengjie, vice executive council chairman of the general alumni association, also made speeches at the conference.

    The general alumni association was founded in November, 2003. In the same year, the first board was established, after which branch associations were formed in other cities. Up to now, 30 associations have been founded in China and abroad. Such a big system and intensive network is a rare case among university alumni associations. In 2004, the alumni office was founded, and alumni websites, periodicals and information database were also established to help alumni communicate with each other. The basic information of more than 50 thousand students has been submitted to the information database. Over the past five years, approximately 10 thousand alumni went back to NCEPU and made efforts to promote the development of NCEPU through various channels, made suggestions to the construction and development, and offered great support to the university.
