On May 29th, teachers and students went to Beijing Blood Center to donate plasma to the earthquake-stricken area, which was one of the activities held to help the quake-stricken area since the May 12th Earthquake happened in Sichuan province.

At 7 a.m., led by Sha Bin (vice-president of NECPU Red Cross Association, director of our University hospital) and students form NCEPU Red Cross Association, the first batch of blood donors from Energy & Power Engineering School, Renewable Energy School and Nuclear Science & Engineering School arrived at Beijing Blood Center. Together there are four batches, about 335 teachers and students who have volunteered to participate in the donation.

On the 11th floor of Beijing Blood Center, blood donors are orderly carrying out the procedures: register, consultation, physical check-up, waiting for examination reports, taking blood samples, drawing blood-donating certificate and receiving souvenirs with the guidance of students from NCEPU Red Cross Association and other volunteers.

Director Sha Bin said, “On the afternoon of May 27th, our university received the Emergency Notice from Beijing Blood Center that the plasma in the quake-stricken area was in an emergency, and asking for an urgent recruitment for the first batch of 300 blood donors. As soon as we received the Notice, the relative functional departments of our university immediately took actions to inform every schools and departments. Only in a day, the number of applicants has exceeded the needed number. The 335 teachers and students who come here today is only a part of the whole applicants.”

On the blood-donating scene, a student who finished donating just now said, “After the earthquake, our university and schools have organized us to donate materials and money for the earthquake-stricken area for times. Hearing that plasma is needed in the earthquake-stricken area, many students volunteered to donate the plasma. I feel rather lucky to be one of the donors to make contributions to people in the earthquake-stricken areas.”

Together there are 283 teachers and students who passed the physical check-up and donated 400 ml plasma each. The plasma is known to reach the earthquake-stricken areas as soon as possible.

Since May 12th earthquake happened in Wenchuan, Sichuan province, our university has organized various activities to show our concern to the earthquake-stricken areas: on May 14th, Wu Zhigong (Party Secretary of NCEPU) and Liu Jizhen (President of NCEPU) visited students whose hometowns were in quake-stricken areas on both Beijing campus and Baoding campus; by May 19th, donations of teachers, students and personnel in our university had reached 1.165 million yuan; at 14:28 on May 19th, teachers and students were gathering at the sports field to perform three-minute silence to mourn the earthquake victims….

The plasma-donating activity shows that our teachers and students are taking actions to inherit the conventional moral value of “When disaster struck, help came from all sides”, and is also the detailed reflection of our university’s idea “running a responsible university”. (Sunshuai)
