A preliminary meeting of China-EU Research and Innovation Partnership Project was held in North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) on April 13th and 14th. Experts from the University of Manchester in London, University of Bologna in Italy, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, University of Zagreb in Croatia, NCEPU, Tsinghua University, Beijing Jiaotong University and Smart Grid Academy of State Grid Corporation of China gathered in NCEPU and discussed issues regarding the implementation of the project. The proposal of NCEPU concerning renewable resources, energy efficiency and urban sustainable energy had been selected to this project with Prof. Yang Yongping being its general director.

The preliminary meeting lasted for two days. In the first day, the EU delegates held a closed-door meeting to determine the major concerns, various issues needed to be discussed in detail, and the assignment of research tasks for each delegate. Then, all the delegates visited the State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electrical Power System with Renewable Sources in NCEPU and had in-depth discussions with the experts in the lab. They were deeply impressed by the lab’s scale, present situation and its development prospect. The delegates also visited the accommodation building for international students and gained a preliminary impression of the accommodation condition in NCEPU. They said they would introduce NCEPU to their students when they returned.

The next day, Prof. Wang Zhongdong, head of the project, chaired the preliminary meeting. As the host, Yang Yongping, Vice President of NCEPU, expressed his warm welcome to all the delegates for their coming to NCEPU. He said that NCEPU, as the Chinese center for the coordination of the project, would play its role as the organizer and coordinator, and devote itself to the platform establishment for scientific research and education between China and EU. The delegates introduced their respective schools and shared the highlights of their scientific research, hoping to find common interests and foundation for future collaboration so that exchange scholars will find their appropriate areas of research interest. Issues were also discussed in detail regarding the admission of doctoral candidates and visiting scholars in their respective schools, and the preparation for joint education programs in the near future.

Both the delegates from China and those from EU expressed their enthusiasm and aspiration to further promote the project. They agreed to hold regular online meetings to solve problems that will rise in the implementation of the project, ensuring a smooth operation of the project.
